the last line
by Irene
What’s your favorite song?
I’d have to say, My Way.
Hitchhiking into another galaxy, vast
and beckoning, on Virgin Galactic.
Age sixty-four (will you still love me?),
and no one’s a virgin anymore,
unless you count space adventures.
Who’s a person you’re in awe of,
and he’d said, the Dalai Lama.
I’d say, if you asked me, Aung San
Suu Kyi, or Queen Elizabeth,
or Oprah Winfrey, but really,
I gotta say, when the sky’s no more
the limit, the smiley man who’ve
had tremendous fun, who’d said,
look for the best in people.
Which of the seven dwarves
would you be? I knew he’d say
Happy. He’s never glum-faced,
his brand’s totally phenomenal,
he’s utterly gone to outer space,
and he started out like a virgin.
Process notes: Pick an old poem you wrote, take the last line as the first line. Says Nicole’s prompt from We Write Poems. So the first line is from an old poem called “Change”. And if you hadn’t guessed by now, the man I’m in awe of is Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Brand. For a person who founded a global brand, spanning across industries, he’s so terribly down-to-earth. Why, he sounds just like one of us when it comes down to the basics. But he’s able to make a difference by creating and achieving experiences that benefit people through his brand. I’ve not read his book, Losing My Virginity, but I sure as hell will.

You’re a clever girl. I couldn’t work out how to do this one, and abandoned it after several abortive drafts.
Thanks for being sweet, Viv. You’d get it back soon enough…yup I always write daring to fail. Peace and blessings for 2011.
Kick-ass opening line, and poem delivers on its promise. And that last line? Would be a fantastic first line, of course. Really like what you did with the prompt. But then, I usually like most of what you do. Hope your New Year is shaping itself around you with warmth and laughter,
Elizabeth
It occurred to me afterward that the last line could refer to space as final frontier or just famous last words. I’ve been wearing a mood necklace and it shows that I’m happy most all the time. So cool. Peace and blessings Elizabeth, and it’s been wonderful making a blogging friend.
Irene you did a fantastic job with this.
A warm New Year’s greeting to you.
Pamela
Thanks for your encouraging words always. Peace and blessings for 2011, Pamela.
Great ride! Your piece made me laugh, light-hearted yet substantive. Well done, indeed! May the New Year smile its face upon your life. ~Brenda
Light-hearted and heady, yay! Thanks Brenda, wishing you a great ride in 2011!
I like where this prompt took you, Irene. The flow of the poem is phenomenal. As far as the Seven Dwarves, I have a winter pullover I often wear (bought it second hand) that fits me. It has the Disney label, and on it is Grumpy. The saying is “Grumpy is a state of mind.” So I guess I would have to be Grumpy!! Happy New Year to you.
You don’t want to be Grumpy, Mary! But a Grumpy winter pullover is very tongue in cheek. Peace and love for 2011!
