the last line

by Irene

What’s your favorite song?
I’d have to say, My Way.

Hitchhiking into another galaxy, vast
and beckoning, on Virgin Galactic.
Age sixty-four (will you still love me?),
and no one’s a virgin anymore,
unless you count space adventures.

Who’s a person you’re in awe of,
and he’d said, the Dalai Lama.
I’d say, if you asked me, Aung San
Suu Kyi, or Queen Elizabeth,
or Oprah Winfrey, but really,
I gotta say, when the sky’s no more
the limit, the smiley man who’ve
had tremendous fun, who’d said,
look for the best in people.

Which of the seven dwarves
would you be? I knew he’d say
Happy. He’s never glum-faced,
his brand’s totally phenomenal,
he’s utterly gone to outer space,
and he started out like a virgin.

Process notes: Pick an old poem you wrote, take the last line as the first line. Says Nicole’s prompt from We Write Poems. So the first line is from an old poem called “Change”. And if you hadn’t guessed by now, the man I’m in awe of is Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Brand. For a person who founded a global brand, spanning across industries, he’s so terribly down-to-earth. Why, he sounds just like one of us when it comes down to the basics. But he’s able to make a difference by creating and achieving experiences that benefit people through his brand. I’ve not read his book, Losing My Virginity, but I sure as hell will.
